Kobo Vox eBook

Vox is Kobo’s first step towards the World of Tablet.  Kobo has been a small Canadian Company and has worked with Companies like Amazon, Bernes & Noble and Sony and has given competition in the products like eReader Touch Edition.

The Kobo Vox is an Android tablet which is reasonable and affordable for the people. It has an internal memory of 8 GB and also has slots for additional external memory. The Vox consists of the eReading application and also has the e book store. GetJar can be accessed through the e book which can be used for downloading free apps.

The Kobo Vox eBook does not have any of the unique features apart from an affordable price if compared to the Kindle Fire. There is nothing to be called exceptional in this android tablet.

The Kobo Vox E Book also faces certain drawbacks related to the speed as the books do not load in the speed they should. The screen does not respond well and the battery life, which occupies the main space in the review, is only OK. There is only one cable which helps in charging as well as transferring files which makes the work quite difficult. Thus, the tablet cannot be marketed as a perfect Android.

The Kobo Vox E Book Weighs up to 14.2 ounces and has an in built memory of 8 GB and can Support external memory through micro SD cards up to 32 GB. The Kobo Vox is the only E Book with a Wi Fi but no Bluetooth. The screen resolution is 1024 x 600 pixels and consists of an anti glare coating. The Device also has a standard USB port for external memory and for transferring files.

Another feature that leave the Vox behind in the race is that it has a processor of only 800 MHz where as Kindle fire and Nook’s tablet give the 1 GHz Dual Core processors with 1 GB RAM, where as the Vox provides a RAM of only half a Gigabyte.

Though these features bring the Kobo Vox E book down in the market of ebooks there is nothing to be said as bad about the Tablet but at the same time there is nothing so great to boast on it also. Being an Android it has the access to android 2.3 Gingerbread and also 15000 free android apps but those are only through the GetJar and thus this Tablet cannot be called a complete Android also.

Kobo is working for making the Vox better and is trying to come over the drawbacks which will happen over a period of time and then it might also catch the market of eBooks and can be rated well amongst the competitors.

Massive Hit in the Market, Big Flop for the Experts?

The all-new Amazon Kindle Fire that has been greatly improved for the use of the community today has really taken the world by storm. Thousands of it are sold every day and its various features really attracts potential buyers to purchase them. However, the same cannot be said for those who are experts in the usability area.

According to Jakob Nielsen, known as the guru of web usability in the USA, he found out that Amazon Kindle Fire is not up to his expectations. According to him, there are a lot of limitations in this tablet device and it is amazing how Amazon is still able to rake huge profits from selling this Amazon Kindle Fire.

His study is based on various aspects but the main objective of the study is to find whether the Amazon Kindle Fire will be able to be used effectively and efficiently without causing any problems. One of the aspects being studied upon is on its hardware. One of its limitations is that the Kindle Fire cannot be used in a prolonged time. This is because it will strain the arms and can lead to cramps. It is also found out that the 7-inch display screen is a bit too big for normal use. It is too big to be hold in one hand and it is too awkward to be used using both hands. Like Nielsen said, it is a device that is an awkward fusion of a tablet and a smart phone.

Aside from the hardware problem, software problems are also present inside the Amazon Kindle Fire. The most glaring error is the tablet only runs on a specific version of Android. This means that the applications being developed for the Apple’s iPad 2 (using iOS) or Samsung Galaxy Tab (using Android) will not be usable in the Kindle Fire.  It will be hard to attract developers to create applications for the Amazon Kindle Fire because of the dominance of Android and iOS nowadays. That being said, the target audience for the Amazon Kindles are also really small, and this will hinder potential developers.

Despite the many limitations, the Amazon Kindle Fire is still a hot item in the market. Perhaps not everyone have the same poor experience like Nielsen and different people also has different tastes. If you are not fond of the Amazon Kindle Fire because of its limitations, there are always other version of Kindles that may be suitable for your taste.

Cool Web Application That You Never Knew

Thousands of web applications are being produced each day all over the world. Some of them are revolutionary, but most of them are just an imitation of what’s available. There is also an imitation that works better than the one that it imitates, improving its features and uses. However, as like most web applications, these higher quality web applications may be buried inside the internet because of poor advertising and low budget given.

Here, we will show you some of the web applications available in the internet that are cool and helpful in their own way.

1. Cryptocat

Love instant messaging but scared of your messages to be intercepted along the way? Cryptocat eliminates this threat where it provides a great and private instant messaging to its users. It works by starting a chatroom with a name and send people the url of the chatroom to join. Any chats will be encrypted and deleted after the chatroom is inactive for 60 minutes and no chat history will be saved.

2. Aherk!

Love challenges? Then Aherk! will be the best application for your usage. Firstly, you will need to define a goal, what to achieve and then set a deadline for the goal to be completed. Then, upload a compromising picture into Aherk! that will be posted to Facebook if you fail to achieve the goal. Tech Things That Didn’t Go As Expected In 2011

There will always be something new in the technology industry. New gadgets, cool mobile phones and smart phones and innovative applications; some of them are greatly expected to match its users’ expectation. Some managed to do it successfully while some failed miserably along the way. Here we have a list of some tech things of the year that did not go as expected.

iPhone 5

Perhaps the most anticipated gadgets of 2011 simply choose not to exist in this year. All the rumours and speculations about how good and advanced the new iPhone 5 will be were all gone down the drain as Apple has chosen not to introduce it this year. Instead, the new iPhone 4S was launched and even though it received critics such as ‘an old gadget with old specifications’, it is still favourable among the Apple fans.

HTC Thunderbolt

Being said as the best and fastest HTC smartphone during its launch, it failed in a really bad way. It did have a blazing data speed thanks to its network provider, Verizon, but it is also the fastest HTC smartphone in battery drainage (and it still is).

Research in Motion

The company behind BlackBerry will need to forget about 2011 fast and move to the next year. Everything seems to fail for RIM this year. The BlackBerry Playbook failed to meet its user’s expectations, the new Blackberry 10 OS has a problem with its trademark, and the long awaited new and revolutionary OS from Blackberry is still being put on hold. RIM also experienced its longest network blackout in the company’s history, but it is nothing compared to the next company after this one.

PSN

The PlayStation Network (PSN) by Sony had its worst network outage in history too. The outage lasted more than a month and the company had to face the wrath of its users, particularly PlayStation 3 users who cannot play their games online. Sony tried to do a campaign to attract their customers back to use the PSN, but the damage had already been done.

webOS

webOS is a really anticipated operating system by HP. However, after the TouchPad’s failure to meet the critic’s expectation and the bad sales, HP killed the webOS even before it had the chance to improve. However, it is expected that the webOS will have a second life thanks to its massive potential in the future applications and devices.

Top iOS Apps of 2011

Hundreds of new apps are published in the AppStore everyday and not all of them are able to provide the best experience for its users. Some are lacking in features, full of bugs, not compatible with older devices and many more reasons. However, those apps which are really good will be remembered and downloaded by many iPhone and iPad users. Here, we will see the top iOS apps that were built and published in the year 2011.

Firstly will be the Tweetbot, a Twitter client for iPhone. When it is first published in April, it proved that even in a congested market with many rivals, a new application can still have a breakthrough. Its ease of use and tons of features which includes advanced gesture support are the main selling point for this application.

W.E.L.D.E.R is another good example of an app inside a congested market. It is a word game that is simple but appealing to its users; build words by swapping letters on a board and when you run out of swap, it will be game over. It is simple to play, easy to learn, hard to master and good for those on-the-go; an instant classic in the word game category.

For those who love photography and multimedia, Super 8 is a must in your iPhone and iPad. It turns the device into a super 8mm camera that is really useful for those who want to have some fun with this old device that has gone virtual. You can control the grain level and the picture effects of the photos you take, and you can also upload them directly into YouTube or share them on Facebook and Twitter.

It was a masterpiece when it was released 10 years ago in the PlayStation 2. Now, it can be played right on your smartphone! Grand Theft Auto 3 are improved in a lot of aspects, especially graphics and the new touch and gesture control really makes it a must buy for those who love the Grand Theft Auto premise.

Last but not least is another app for those who love editing works on pictures and videos. Mixel is and iPad app that let users create digital collages from any pictures that they found on the web or their device storage. You can cut, paste and put vignettes into those pictures making it a special and unique artwork that can be shared to social network sites. You can also follow a user’s profile and share the elements that they used in your own work.

Top 5 Android Apps For 2011

Android is the most widely used smart phone operating system after Apple’s iOS. This is mainly because it is used by a lot of smart phones manufactured by a number of smart phone maker, unlike iOS which is only used by Apple’s devices like iPhone and iPad. Making an exceptionally good Android application is really hard because of the many screen sizes and the device types that the developer will need to think about. It is also hard because of the inconsistent operating system updates that are always feature new features which means new coding to be mastered.

It is not easy to build an Android application that uses all the technology available in the operating system, and it is also hard to maintain the accessibility of the application to the users. If the developers manage to build this kind of application, it can be said as a masterpiece that deserves an award and recognition. Here are the top five ‘masterpieces’ of Android that receives millions of downloads produced in the year 2011.

1. Any.DO: To Do List

It is the best productivity and to-do application exclusive for Android users only. It has an elegant interface that is not only just looks but is optimized for functionality. It features voice-driven commands and also a solid integration with Google Accounts so whenever you create a new task on your Google Calendar, you save the hassle of creating it twice.

2. Lightbox – Photos & Effects

It can be said like Instagram for the iPhone but with a whole lot of other features. It can be used as a photo journal and you are able to arrange your pictures, unlike the Instagram. The top-class visual display and compatibility to almost all types of Android devices makes it a common app to be downloaded.

3. Amazon MP3

A library to more than 20 million songs and a free 5GB of storage to each user, it is hard to see that this application will not be loved by the Android fans. Widely regarded as a competitive rival for the iTunes.

4. AirDroid

The best application to operate your smartphone from a personal computer or laptop. It uses the Wi-Fi connection to connect the two devices and features regularly changed passwords to handle privacy problems.

5. Swiftkey X Keyboard

A keyboard customisation for the Android devices. It features larger keys and a top-notch word prediction algorithm with three color schemes to choose from. It can also learn from the previous messages and emails that you have written.
